Main Meri Patni Aur Woh SYNOPSIS

At 34, Mithilesh Shukla (Rajpal Yadav) is a bachelor. A librarian with the University of Lucknow, Mithilesh had successfully avoided marriage, despite all the family pressure. Unable to fight against an ''ideal proposal'', an over emotional mother and his lawyer uncle, he is forced to go to Bareli and see a girl. Soon, Mithilesh meets Veena (Rituparna Sengupta). A few inches taller, naturally charming, intelligent, naughty yet innocent, and last but not the least, very beautiful, Veena leaves Mithilesh speechless. Very rapidly, he finds his feelings shifting from, embarrassment of rejecting, to fear of rejection. Totally at sea with such emotions, Mithilesh is further stunned when Veena accepts the proposal and expresses her will to marry him. Mithilesh helplessly succumbs to this act of God, Cupid, Fate, and decides to marry. While on their journey to, ''...and they lived happily ever after'', Mithilesh is reminded of his ordinary looks and Veena's stunning beauty, time and again. Most call him ''Lucky'', for getting Veena as a wife, while others appear eager to begin interaction with her. To regain his much valued peace of mind, Mithilesh decides to take some action, with detailed planning and Lord Shiva's blessings, he very easily sorts out people like, the cheeky vegetable vendor, the talkative milkman, the over friendly friend, Salim. As Mithilesh starts to breath easy, Akash (Kay Kay Menon) moves in the flat opposite theirs. Veena and Akash are childhood friends, meeting after years. Akash is a tall dark and handsome Computer Hardware Engineer from Delhi. Despite all the plans and blessings, this time Mithilesh is unable to avoid the, Veena-any other man interaction. Factors like, Akash and Veena's similar preferences, a lot of catching up to do, Akash's boyish charm, often make Mithilesh feel like the intruder. Watching Veena and Akash together, Mithilesh can't help but think about how well suited, they are. In Akash's shadow he realizes that Veena deserves better. Restless and contemplating his next move, Mithilesh is shattered when he finds out that Veena feels the same. Mithilesh's efforts to set things ''right'' and make everyone happy, forms the end of this love story of an odd couple.

Main Meri Patni Aur Woh REVIEWS

Another one of those good things in a small package

By Vikas Mohan, MovieTalkies.com, 07 October 2005 4 / 5

The long and short of Main Mere Patni Aur Woh is that at times it will make you smile and at times you'll find yourself nodding your head vigorously and saying "ah! I know that feeling". A light and warm comedy, Main Mere Patni Aur Woh is as human as it gets. The movie deals with the insecurity of an ordinary looking man, married to a very attractive woman, and the sometimes comic and the sometimes serious situations that this gives rise to. Mithilesh Shukla (Rajpal Yadav) is a simple, unassuming librarian working at the Lucknow University. Strained by his mother's wishes, he goes to see a girl but with no intentions of taking the meeting seriously. His uncle, played by Vinod Nagpal, accompanies him and tells him not to worry at all as the girl might just refuse to marry an ordinary looking, short man like him. When Rajpal sees that the girl (Rituparna Sengupta), is tall, beautiful and well educated, he feels certain that she'll refuse to marry him. But to everyone's surprise including Mithilesh's, she agrees, and they are married. Barely a day into marital bliss, Mithilesh Shukla's worry begins. From visiting the salon, to raising the seat of his scooter, Rajpal will do anything to look good enough to be his wife's husband. Facing contest in his own friend, (Varun Badola), whom his wife gets along very well with, Rajpal gives the relation a 'safe' edge by urging them into a brotherly-sisterly 'raakhi' bond. Barely done with one man's supposed 'shadow' on their married life, Kay Kay Menon makes his entry. An old classmate of Rituparna, Kay Kay, is any husband's worst nightmare, as he is naturally charming, outgoing, good looking and in Rajpal's case, is taller than him, and comes with an impressive persona. Kay Kay is scheduled to stay in Lucknow for a month, and Rajpal's creeping insecurity takes on to a mammoth scale, where certain situations convince him that he is having an affair with his wife. The movie goes on to show what happens next. An interesting film with an unusual take on comedy, the movie is a very different attempt at the male insecurity. Though the movie picks up well, in the second half, Rajpal's worries seem to drag, and the climax too is a let down somewhere. Performance-wise, Rajpal Yadav is great. Rituparna Sengupta too fits her role well. Kay Kay Menon's understated portrayal of his role and persona, add to the movie. As a director, Chandan Arora's fresh and unexplored take on certain situations and scenes is refreshing to see, making Main Mere Patni Aur Woh a different and enjoyable fare.
