In 2013, Kamal Haasan had played RAW agent Wisam Ahmed Kashmiri, India’s answer to James Bond in spy thriller Vishwaroopam, a film which was praised back then for its content and years later, Kamal is back with the sequel Vishwaroopam 2. But will the sequel prove to be a worthy successor? Read on…
‘Vishwaroopam 2’ is not a sequel in the strictest sense, but also delves into Wisam’s past as an Army officer and his adventures back then. In the earlier film, Wisam had locked horns with Omar (Rahul Bose) and this time, he is back to hunting for Omar and Salim (Jaideep Ahlawat), who are determined to carry out a massive terror attack in New Delhi. How Wisam manages to save the day with the help of his team comprising Colonel Jagannath (Shekhar Kapur) and Ashmita (Andrea Jeremiah) forms the rest of the plot.
Kamal, who is above 60, is nevertheless in top form as Wisam and it is evident in the action scenes that he executes with an admirable grace. His screen presence and easy charm makes Vishwaroopam 2 a delightful watch, despite the fact that the film does lack finesse. Andrea is confident enough but her character tends to get on your nerves with the constant wisecracks and an almost insolent attitude. Pooja Kumar is easy on the eyes and decent enough in her role while Shekhar Kapur is dignity personified as Wisam’s handler. Bose and Ahlawat as the baddies are menacing enough without being caricaturish.
As for the film itself, like mentioned earlier, ‘Vishwaroopam 2’ lacks finesse and the film has an outdated feel to it as it was shot in 2013, after all. Also, if you have not seen the prequel, this film may confuse you at times as you may find yourself wondering about the backstories of certain characters. In addition, the chemistry between Wisam, his wife Nirupama and his junior Ashmita is not effective enough and the scenes involving their interpersonal dynamics could have been handled better, I feel.
However, what the film lacks for in finesse, it more than makes up for it with its action scenes. The unarmed combat scenes are gritty and brutal and you may find yourself wincing involuntarily as Kamal breaks bones with his bare hands. But let us warn you that ‘Vishwaroopam 2’ is not a Mission Impossible or a Bond film so don’t go expecting that level of finesse and execution.
However, if you are a Kamal Haasan fan, ‘Vishwaroopam 2’ is not a bad watch as such…
