Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana Movie Review: A Decent Fare

Rajkummar Rao has become the ‘go to’ guy when it comes to playing the small-town protagonist and after Newton, the actor is seen once again in Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana, which is basically about the wrath of a jilted lover. Does Rao manage to impress us yet again? Let’s find out…

Satyendra (Rajkummar Rao ) is a humble clerk from Kanpur, who falls in love with Aarti Shukla (Kriti Kharbanda) after meeting her for an arranged marriage set up. Aarti too reciprocates his feelings, but pulls a ‘Runaway Bride’ on the wedding day after getting to know that her in-laws won’t allow her to work after marriage. Needless to say, Satyendra is devastated.

Years later, when Satyendra becomes an IAS officer, he starts targeting Aarti, who is a junior officer after allegations of corruption are leveled against her. Will Satyendra exact his revenge or decide to forget the humiliation he suffered when Aarti ditched him at the altar?

Rao, who has been impressing us since his debut film Love, Sex Aur Dhoka, is a sheer delight to watch as the humble clerk-turned-vindictive government officer. Rao is one such actor, who can slip into any character and he proves it once again with this film, in which he is believable as a man bent on revenge. Kriti Kharbanda is decent enough as Aarti Shukla and manages to hold her own in the scenes that she is a part of. The supporting cast comprising Govind Namdev, Manoj Pahwa, Vipin Sharma and others, is quite solid.

As for the film itself, the story is quite decent and could have been better had the second half not been dragged. Also, the climax is somewhat unrealistic (Unfortunately, I cannot elaborate as it will give away the plot). Small-town films are doing quite well at the box-office and I believe ‘Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana’ too may join the league of small-budget films set in small-towns, which are providing decent entertainment for the family.
