Irrfan Khan tried his hand at romantic comedy with Piku and the audience accepted the intense actor’s tryst with the genre with open arms and the actor is back to romance and make us his lady love laugh with yet another movie –Qarib Qarib Singlle.
Jaya (Parvathy) is a widow who detests her loneliness and tries to find love on a dating site where she meets chatterbox Yogi (Irrfan Khan), a roguishly cheerful poet. On a whim, Parvathy decides to accompany Yogi on a journey to meet his three ex-girlfriends as the latter wants to know how they are faring without him and how the journey brings Yogi and Parvathy closer to each other, forms the rest of the plot.
Irrfan is truly a delight to watch as Yogi, who just can’t seem to shut up and has everyone in splits with his ‘man mauji’ attitude and sense of humour and we wish to see the actor in more such roles in the future. South actress Parvathy, who makes her Bollywood debut with this film, too is quite impressive as the sober Jaya, who learns to loosen up in Yogi’s company. The chemistry between the two actors is quite adorable and that is certainly one of the highlights of the film.
As for the film itself, Qarib Qarib Singlle starts on an interesting and entertaining note and the first half is quite an engaging fare. However, the second half has been stretched a lot and we wish director Tanuja Chandra could have made it crisper. Also, the climax if somewhat confusing and it is tough to pinpoint that one trigger, which makes the lead pair realize their love for each other.
The film has many unanswered questions like the one mentioned above and you walk out with a feeling of incompleteness. To be very honest, the film is worth a watch only because of Irrfan, without whom, the narrative may have fallen flat on its face.
In conclusion, watch this film only if you are a die-hard Irrfan fan.
