Jab Harry Met Sejal Movie Review: A Wasted Trip

Since the beginning of his career, Imtiaz Ali has explored the plight of confused people in love and on some kind of a journey in his films and his latest offering Jab Harry Met Sejal is no different.

Harry (Shah Rukh Khan), a tour guide in Europe, is going through what seems like a mid-life crisis when Sejal (Anushka Sharma), a Gujarati chatterbox walks into his life and demands that he help her find her engagement ring, which she has lost somewhere. The initially reluctant Harry agrees to help her when she threatens to complain about him to his boss and the two embark on a journey to find the ring.

When it comes to intense romance and wry humour, Shah Rukh Khan has no equal and the King Khan unleashes both in his role as the mildly cynical Harry, who is forced to put up with the gregarious Sejal. SRK seems to be growing fine with age just like wine and it is a treat to watch him in the film. As for Anushka, though her heavy Gujarati accent is a bit fake, there is a certain cuteness about her, which is highly endearing. The highlight of the film is definitely their chemistry and their banter, which is totally entertaining.

As for the film itself, there is no doubt that Jab Harry Met Sejal is quite a pretty film, but it must be said that the love story is not so convincing. Sejal, who misses her flight and comes back to search for her lost ring, seems more interested in hanging out with Harry and prying about his life than looking for the ring. Had the film shown that the two grow close during the course of their adventure, it may have worked, but here, Sejal seems smitten with Harry from day one, even though she is happily engaged. Also, the way the two grow close to each other, doesn’t seem convincing at all and though the narrative is entertaining in places, it lacks conviction. Granted that there are a few beautiful moments in the film, but the overall story is too weak to touch your heart.

If you are a fan of Imtiaz Ali, we suggest you revisit his Jab We Met and Highway instead of risking this film. However, if you are a SRK fan, the movie may be total ‘paisa vasool’ for you…
