Tell us about your character in Jo Bole So Nihaal?
I play the role of a Sardar cop from a small village. He is very gullible and this trait results in him getting branded as a traitor who helped a terrorist escape. I just fell in love with the character and the way the film was scripted.
An out and out comedy character for the first time for you…
Though I have done comedy roles before, for the first time I am playing this sort of a character. This character is cute, adorable and God fearing. He believes in Wahe Guru and accomplishes everything with God’s help.
You share a good rapport with Rahul Rawail. Comment.
We have done lots of films together and there is a mutual understanding between both of us. Every film has been different from the previous one.
The film stars two new girls with you. Comment.
I have worked with newcomers before as well. This generation of actors are more focused and confident. Due to lack of exposure, they have an element of innocence.
This is for the third time that you will be seen in a turban after ‘Border’ and ‘Gadar’. Comment.
(Smiles) I will be joyous if ‘Jo Bole So Nihaal’ works out as well as the others.
Nowadays action films are not doing well at the box-office. What are the reasons you attribute to this?
Today films are made to cater to commercial markets created by multiplexes, not for those who enjoy good cinema. Though watching a movie is the cheapest source of entertainment in our country, price hike and piracy has changed that. And since audience taste can’t be changed over night, films don’t do well. The audience taste can’t change over night. In the South, films do good business despite its limited audience. This is accomplished because the industry is united and backed by the government.
‘Socha Na Tha’ was appreciated but couldn’t do well at the box-office. Comment.
My intention was to create a platform for Abhay and I succeeded in doing just that. The problem with us is that we try to measure everything with success as a parameter. Good cinema or bad cinema is irrelevant. I expected the film to do much better since it was a wholesome entertainer. Often it happens that good films don’t do well and on the other hand bad films do good business.
When will the audiences see all three Deols together?
Anil Sharma is working on a couple of scripts at the moment. He will be coming up with some ideas for three of us along with a two-hero project (Bobby and me). Later we will decide which film to go ahead with.
Will it be produced by Vijayta Films?
No. We will not be producing the film.
Is it due to financial problems, your company gone through?
Yes. We have got ourselves into a financial mess. Production is a full time job and I have realized that I can’t handle too many things simultaneously. On the other hand, I have also been unwell.
Is the movie on Prithviraj Chouhan shelved?
No. We are definitely going ahead with the film. However, I will not be producing the film. Dr. Chandraprakash Dwivedi is negotiating with a couple of makers. A few big names are joining hands to produce the film and Dr. Dwivedi is working on it. I have always dreamt of doing a costume drama on the lines of ‘Gladiator’.
