Sunny: 'This role will prove I'm a sensitive actor'
By MovieTalkies.com, 15, February 2011

Sunny Deol He's pleased as punch over the winning reception to 'Yamla Pagla Deewana'. Sunny Deol is also grinning moonbeams over having bagged what he terms as "the most challenging role of his career," the character of a Sanskrit teacher in 'Mohalla 80', that Deol feels will spotlight his sensitivity as an actor. Sunny Deol speaks to Ali Peter John about his excitement over the Dr. Chandraprakash Dwivedi helmed flick and declares that a sequel to 'Yamla' is surely on the cards… The Deol bungalow in Juhu looks like a mini Punjab during 'Baisakhi' (the harvesting festival) these days. The atmosphere is always like this because of a popular and gracious host (Dharmendra). But this time the atmosphere is much more festive. There are many more people walking in and out. And there are times when group of people who have specially come from Punjab dance the "bhangra" outside the Deol's house and are applauded by some Deol or the other and treated to sweets and glasses of rich home made Punjabi 'lassi'. The Deols are celebrating the grand success of 'Yamla Pagla Deewaana' which had been officially declared a hit all over even by the hardened trade analysts and trade pundits. The last time they had reason to have a grand celebration was when the three Deols, Dharmendra and his two sons came together for the first time in 'Apne'. The Deols also thought it fit to celebrate their success with the cast, their friends and the media. A day after the party, I met Sunny in a very strange outfit. He was sitting in his air conditioned van wearing a 'dhoti' and a blue 'kurta', with his hair trimmed short and having a thick black and real moustache. It was a very different Sunny, but the sunny smile remained the same as it has always been while we talk about this 'new look' which led to us talking about the new film 'Mohalla 80' he was doing directed by Dr. Chandrakant Dwivedi; his own plans and those of the Deol family…… This 'new look' has certainly made me very curious…. I am sure anyone who knows Sunny Deol will be surprised to see me like this. The film I am doing for a very talented director, Dr. Chandrapraksh Dwivedi is in a way the best film I have done so far and it is the demand of the subject that I look like this throughout the film. I am playing a simple Sanskrit teacher in the film so there goes the Sunny Deol of the "maar dhaad" and action and song and dances. It is a very simple film but also one of the most complex films and a great challenge of me. I always wanted to do a role like this which would prove that I was a sensitive actor and thank God that offer come to me, at last. What do you think about Dr. Dwivedi as a director? I think he is one of the best directors we have today, but has not been given the kind of respect that he deserves for the kind of work he has done in such a short time. I had watched glimpses of his first serial 'Chanakya' in which he also played the title role and I think did a better job than some of our own professionals and so called great actors. He stayed on in my mind and my determination to work with him grew very strong when I saw his work as a director in a film called 'Pinjar.' How did this rare opportunity come to you ? Dr. Dwivedi had already tried to make a film with me based on the life of the great warrior king Prithviraj Chauhan. We even worked on the subject for some time but had to give up for reasons which I am not going to make public, but we had promised each other that we would do another film together. In the meanwhile, he tried to make 'Ashoka' with Amitabh Bachchan, which I think was a very different kind of subject dealing with the emperor Ashoka and his son for the first time. He couldn't make the film again for reasons best known to him and to Mr.Bachchan. How did this film 'Mohalla 80' come about? Dr. Dwivedi then read a novel 'Kashi ka Assi' by Dr. Kashinath Singh, one of the best Hindi writers of today and he was fascinated by it. He bought the rights and even got the writer to work with him on script which took them eighteen months and fourteen drafts to reach their own and collective point of satisfaction. It was only when Dr.Dwivedi seriously thought about the character of the Sanskrit teacher that he thought about me again and when he narrated the subject to me, I was floored. I made an on the spot decision to do 'Mohalla 80' and accept the challenge to play the Sanskrit teacher. What got you so excited about the film? First of all, I have a great weakness for 'period' films and great characters from ancient Indian history. With 'Mohalla 80,' I got the perfect script and finally the character I was to play in the film was also terrific. It is really so exciting that I have change all my plans and given the film which is now called 'Mohalla 80', all the priority. How much of the film of the have you completed? I had told Dr.Dwivedi that I would start the film only after 'Yamla Pagla Deewaana' would be declared a hit and by God's grace that happened. And within a day, I asked the good doctor to start making his film and believe it or not he created a major part of ancient Banaras in Mumbai with the help of his talented art director Bhupendra Singh. Within no time we were all shooting for the time. I cannot believe that we have completed half the film. It is a very good lesson to learn for all filmmakers, make all your preparations with all the precision and passion and then work become so very easy What is the next move for 'Mohalla 80'? The entire unit will soon shift to Banaras where our real trial starts. The maker, Mr. Vinay Tiwari who is from Banaras has made all the arrangements to see that we don't have problems while have shooting and my director is all charged to shoot the most important parts of the film after which the shooting will be complete and I will be free to move on to the other projects I have lined up for myself and our company Has the success of 'Yamla Pagla Diwaana' surpassed your expectations? There are certain times when words make no difference when you want to express your feelings. The success of our film is one such example when we cannot express the feelings that are very much there and will be there in our hearts forever. Will the three of you come together again? There are many tempting offers, but we have not found the time to sit down together and think about them. But I am sure that we will be making a sequel to 'Yamla Pagla Deewaana' and I will then start working on the sequel to 'Ghayal' made many years ago. What has been your personal reaction to success of 'Yamla Pagla Deewaana'? It has been one big kick in the right place to go on and get better, because if you don't, then they will show you the place you would never like to see. What is your opinion about the way films are being rejected by people? It is very simple to understand. We are not giving people what they want and they have a right to punish to every filmmaker who tries to take them for a ride. Give them their money's worth and they will give you all their love, admiration and the much wanted success every filmmaker aims for. It is high time we realised that the 'janta' have woken up and are not going to take any nonsense from any one, however big or mighty or clever he or she may be. How do you feel about your father turning 75? Absolutely great. He has always been a man of the soil, blessed by God and loved by people for 50 long years. It is all this that have made him the Dharamji he is for the world and the Paaji we, his sons and his family are proud of.
