For Dev Anand the word impossible just doesn't exist. Some days ago he was looking for an appropriate actor to play the role of the Home Minister for his forthcoming film "Charge Sheet". He thought of many popular characters from Mumbai and crossed them out for reasons best known to him, but he needed an actor to play the role and was determined to find.
It was even while he was trying to find his right choice that Amar Singh, one of the most well known leader of the Samajwadi Party dropped in at his penthouse to pay him a courtesy call. They talked politics for more than an hour. Dev told Amar Singh how he was disillusioned with the way the politician of the country were misleading the country and taking it backward while other countries were moving way ahead. Amar Singh had no other way but to nod his head because Dev knew what he was talking about because if there is one man who is politically aware without being a politician it is Dev. Singh had come to Dev with a specific purpose. He somehow wanted to rope in Dev to campaign for his party during the coming general elections. Dev in his own charming and clever way wriggled out but he was struck by an instant idea. He casually asked Amar Singh to play the Home Minister in his film. Singh tried out all his ways to turned down Dev's offer but he did not know the power of Dev's charm and by the time they finish their meeting he had convinced Singh to play the role. Singh said, he had never acted in his entire life. Dev told him he was one of the best actors in the country and Singh blushed and agreed. Before he left, he told Dev that he was free on March 24 and 25, but he could not move out of New Delhi because of his schedule as the campaign manager of his Party. Dev was not one to give up. He told Singh that he would fly his unit and shoot in Singh's house and office if he had no problems. Singh could not say no to Dev's request.
Dev and his unit flew to New Delhi on the night of March 23 and shot with Amar Singh during the next two days. There were time when Singh almost gave up but Dev kept on charging him and inspiring him till he came up with a perfect shot and by the time Dev had finished his shooting with Singh, he had made his debut in films. Said an excited Dev after he finished shooting with Singh, "Amar Singh is not only a good politician but also a born actor who was easier to work with then working with even the most professional actor and I am not saying this to matter him or because he has done me a favour."
If all goes well Dev will also have the newly anointed politician, Sanjay Dutt, the Samajwadi Party candidate for the elections to the Lok Sabha in his film. Sanjay has already made a promise to Dev to shoot for his film as soon as he can find the time which he has also said will be his first priority. Sanjay has his own personal reason for doing the role offered by Dev. He had heard stories from his father (Sunil Dutt) about how Dev Anand was the only man to encourage him to be an actor when he was working as an announcer with Radio Ceylon way back in the fifties. Sanjay had found his way of expressing his gratitude to Dev for doing what he had done for his father.
