Born on September 9, 1967 in Amritsar it was a long road traveled by Akshay Kumar, born Rajiv Hari Om Bhatia, from a waiter in Bangkok, to one of the most successful actors in Bollywood.
As an instructor in martial artist, Rajiv Bhatia always dreamt of making it big in that field but when a student suggested that with his good looks and a good built, he should take up modeling, the anonymous Rajiv Bhatia began his journey as Akshay Kumar who then slowly but surely worked his way up to becoming one of the most talented stars of the industry. Stunned at the pay package and his success as a model, Akshay took the next obviousstep, and entered into films. However unlike most of the other stars in histime, Akshay neither had star parents, nor a godfather to launch him.
Although, his first few films were unsuccessful at the box office, they helped Akshay get noticed for his dancing abilities and his dare-devilish stunts. His first true hit film was 'Khiladi' and although it was a success, the top banners continued to be elusive until 'Yeh Dillagi' released, it not only got him recognition but marked his position as a top league actor.
Though, 'Jai Kishen' and 'Main Khiladi Tu Anari' were quite successful at the box office, it was 'Mohra' and 'Sabse Bada Khiladi' that catapulted Kumar to fame and established his position as one of the top most heroes of the industry. With a series of 'Khiladi' movies including the 'Khiladiyon Ke Khiladi', Akshay became the quintessential 'action hero'. But with 'Mr. and Mrs. Khiladi', 'Dil To Pagal Hai' and 'Aflatoon', he attempted new genres in order to change his stereotypical image, and he was quite successful at it.Another attempt at a new role with 'Ajnabee', where he played the villain, was again well portrayed and well received by audiences and critics alike. 'Dhadkan', where he starred opposite Shilpa Shetty, reaffirmed the fact that aside from being an action hero, Akshay Kumar was also the perfect romanticlead. In the same year came another memorable performance with the film 'Hera Pheri' which brought to the forefront his strength in comedy and superb timing as he held his ground with the seasoned Paresh Rawal and Suniel Shetty.
Akshay Kumar continued to improve with every film, from 'Khakee', 'Mujhse Shaadi Karogi', 'Aitraaz', 'Waqt', 'Awara Paagal Deewana', 'Garam Masala' and 'Phir Hera Pheri' proved that Akshay was sure-shot hit at the box-office.
In 2006 he starred alongside Salman Khan and Preity Zinta in the romantic musical 'Jaan-E-Mann'. Though the movie was appreciated by critics it failed to rake in moolah at the box-office. However the year concluded with his hit comedy film 'Bhagam Bhag', which was a success.
2007 proved to be a milestone year for Akshay Kumar as he delivered four super hits that year. His first release of the year, Namastey London, was both critically and commercially successful, His next two releases, 'Heyy Babyy' and 'Bhool Bhulaiyaa', were declared hit as well. Akshay's last release of the year, 'Welcome', did extremely well commercially and was a blockbuster hit.
'Tashan', marked his comeback to the Yash Raj Films banner after a hiatus of eleven years. Although 'Tashan' was one of the most anticipated film of that year it bombed at the box-office. His second film, 'Singh Is Kinng', however brought relief to him, as it became a huge success. He also dubbed for animated film 'Jumbo' in 2007. The year also saw Kumar making his small screen debut as the host of the successful show 'Fear Factor – Khatron Ke Khiladi'. He later returned to host the show's second season in 2009.
In 2010 he appeared in 'Housefull' which was a super hit, followed by 'Khatta Meetha', directed by Priyadarshan which was an average grosser. He also starred in Vipul Shah's 'Action Replayy'and Farah Khan's 'Tees Maar Khan' both of which were box office failures.
Akshay's first release of year 2011 was 'Patiala House' which was declared a flop by Box Office India followed by Anees Bazmee's 'Thank You' which was declared average by the trade pundits. He also co-produced a 'Speedy Singhs' in the same year, Akshay Kumar, also dubbed for the Hindi version of Hollywood, action blockbuster, 'Transformers: Dark of the Moon'. The year concluded for Akshay with Rohit Dhawan's 'Desi Boyz' in which he stars alongside John Abraham. His first release of the year ‘Housefull 2’ was successful and ‘Rowdy Rathore’ met with amazing response at the box-office, being his best opening till date. His next production venture 'Joker', directed by Shirish Kunder sank without a trace at the box-office.
His ambitious production 'OMG Oh My God!', directed by Umesh Shukla and starring Paresh Rawal, released in September and opened to rave reviews from the audiences and critics.
His next film is the sequel to Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai. He was last seen in 2012 in Khiladi 786, alongside Asin. His first release in 2013 was Neeraj Pandey's Special 26, where he was seen alongside Jimmy Sheirgill, Anupam Kher, Manoj Bajpayee and Kajal Aggarwal.
His wife Twinkle Khanna gave birth to a baby girl in September-end, adding another member to their family. The couple already has a ten-year-old son named Aarav.
