Bina Rai PROFILE

'Yeh Zindagi Usiki Hai Jo Kisi Ka Ho Gaya', was the swansong sung by Anarkali in the film by the same name in 1953. The actress playing the role of the ill fated Anarkali was none other than Bina Rai. And true to the words of the song, the actress lived her life for love, her love for acting and films and her love for her husband, the late Premnath, who passed away in 1992. Bina Rai was a 1st year Arts student at the Isabella Theodore College in Lucknow when she came across a talent contest and participated. Bina was always actively involved in college dramatics but had never thought of taking up the career as an actress till she won the talent contest and with a leading role in Kishore Sahu's 'Kali Ghata' in 1951. 'Kali Ghata' soon became a craze and formed a hit pair with actors like Pradeep Kumar and Premnath, who she ultimately married. They are believed to have met and fallen in love on the sets of 'Aurat', which was desi version of the Biblical story of Samson and Delialah. The two produced their own movies like 'Shagufta', 'Prisoner of Golconda' and 'Watan', all of which flopped. This real life couple could never deliver a hit as reel couple. However, Bina Rai's professional pairing with Pradeep Kumar proved to be very beneficial and gave rise to hits like 'Anarkali', 'Taj Mahal' and 'Ghunghat', and also won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress in 1960 for 'Ghunghat'.The actress retired from films and acting after the release of 'Taj Mahal' and opted for a quiet, reclusive life. On Sunday, December 6, 2009, the actress passed away due to a cardiac arrest at the age of 73. She is survived by her two sons, Monty and Prem Kishen and her grandchildren Aakansha and Siddharth Malhotra, who is currently directing the remake of Stepmother.
