Yusuf Khan absconded to Pune after a terrible fight with his father and once there, found himself washing vegetables and laying tables in a British army camp. But destiny had other plans for this young man and he soon found himself being selected as an actor with the Bombay Talkies Studio. He debuted with 'Jwar Bhaata' in 1944 but it was with ‘Shaheed’ in 1948 that the world came to recognize this inimitable star. Dilip Kumar had arrived. But with playing the tragedy-struck lover in films like 'Mela', 'Andaaz', 'Babul', 'Jogan', 'Deedar' and 'Devdas', which did take his career to scaling heights, but ironically affected his health in real life, and he ended up seeking psychiatric help. Advised not to take his job so seriously and to take up ‘lighter’ roles as an alternative for sometime, Dilip Kumar promptly complied and did films like 'Azaad', 'Kohinoor', 'Naya Daur' and 'Madhumati'. The transformation seemed to be a blessing in disguise as with 'Mughal-E-Azam' and 'Ganga Jamuna' he reached the peak of his career and was recognized as the most versatile actor that India has ever produced. With films like 'Vidhaata', 'Mashaal', 'Shakti' and 'Karma', Dilip Kumar continued to win accolades for his performance. In 1991, showman Subhash Ghai took the risk of bringing two ace actors Dilip Kumar and Rajkumar together in his next film, 'Saudagar', and his gamble paid off. This tremendously talented actor has won many awards so including the Dadasaheb Phalke award. Married to yesteryear actress Saira Bano, the couple lives in Mumbai.
