This beautiful 14-year-old child-woman made her debut with Moti Lal in Mehboob's 'Taqdeer' in 1943. But for this convent educated girl nothing that substantial happened and she still was looking out for meaningful roles to carve out a niche for herself. She was yet to gain the love and admiration of the audiences. Her first film with Raj Kapoor was 'Aag' (1948) where even Raj was chiseling out the image of a director. As for Nargis, nothing much happened then also. She was not a major star. Nargis' true recognition came from Mehboob's 'Andaz' where she played the role of a modern girl. This seemed to be the right kind of role for her and she became instantly famous. She continued doing films like 'Barsaat', 'Anhonee' and 'Jogan' with Mehboob. But it was Raj Kapoor's 'Awara' in 1951 which paved the way for her and she started giving good movies with him. Raj Kapoor - Nargis pair became the ultimate one and there came many more movies like 'Shri 420', 'Chori Chori' and 'Aah'. There were at least 15 films with the two of them together. After she had decided to work exclusively with him, Mehboob offered Nargis 'Mother India' which she could not refuse. This film turned out to be the greatest hits of all times and brought Nargis the kind of fame which no one even could dream of. Rajendra Kumar and Sunil Dutt, as her sons, also had done a good job. Sunil Dutt got married to Nargis and she retired from films. Now their son, Sanjay Dutt, is one of the top heroes of our times and has worked with almost all the heroines.
