Konkona Sen Sharma PROFILE
At first glance, she hardly seemed to be the type to fit into the shoes of a Bollywood film heroine. But the times have been fortunate for the young Konkona Sen Sharma (December 3, 1979), daughter of Bengali film actress and director, Aparna Sen.
She has been lucky with the kind of roles that she has etched in both Bengali and Hindi cinema which have catapulted her to success. She is the winner of two National awards, one for best actress ('Mr & Mrs Iyer') and for best supporting actress for Omkara. Besides that, she also has two Filmfare awards in her kitty best supporting actress (for 'Omkara' and Life In A… Metro). Then, there are the awards that she has won from the Bengali Films Journalists Association for 'Ek Je Aachhe Kanya' and '15 Park Avenue', besides winning the Mahindra Indo American Arts Council (MIAAC) Film Festival award in 2007 for best actress for Dosar.
Konkona made her debut as a child in a Bengali film called 'Indira'. Her debut as an adult too was in a Bengali film. But she shot into prominence with her mother's English film, 'Mr and Mrs Iyer', opposite Rahul Bose. She followed it up with another thumping performance in Madhur Bhandarkar's Page 3. By now, she was accepted and acknowledged as an actress of repute. She soon found herself very much a part of the mainstream when she was cast opposite actors like Saif Ali Khan in Vishal Bhardwaj's 'Omkara' and Irrfan Khan in Anurag Basu's 'Life In A … Metro'. Konkona continued to stun with her performances in films like her mother's 15 Park Avenue and the Bengali film, 'Dosar', directed by Rituparno Ghosh. The other films that she did include Bhandarkar's Traffic Signal and Yash Raj banner's Laaga Chunari Mein Daag and Madhuri Dixit's comeback film, Aaja Nachle.
In both the Yash Raj movies, the actress, who was cast opposite Kunal Kapoor, managed to make her presence felt among the likes of Rani Mukerji and Jaya Bachchan. The actress began 2009 with an English film, The President Is Coming.
2009 was prolific for Konkana with Zoya Akhtar's Luck By Chance and Ayan Mukerji's Wake Up Sid. Konkona, who had been dating actor Ranvir Shorey since 2007, married him on September 3, 2010, at a private ceremony. The couple had their first child, Haroon, in March 2011. Recent reports suggest that all is not well with the couple these days. In 2010, Konkona was seen in Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge, opposite Ajay Devgn, and Mirch. The following year, she was seen in 7 Khoon Maaf.
In 2013, her latest Hindi film, Ek Thi Daayan, also starring Emraan Hashmi, Huma Qureshi and Kalki Koechlin, hit the screens.
