Farhan Akhtar PROFILE

The list to Farhan Akhtar’s filmy connections is endless. This dynamic person wears a variety of caps-actor, singer, lyricist, director television host and co-producer which is quite not surprising considering he is the son of legendary screenwriters Javed Akhtar and Honey Irani, stepson to Shabana Azmi, grandson to famous Urdu poet Jan Nisar Akhtar and cousin to film director and choreographer Farah Khan.
Born and brought up in Mumbai, Farhan made his directorial debut at the young age of 27 with ‘Dil Chahta Hai’ in 2001 starring Aamir Khan, Saif Ali khan and Akshaye Khanna. The movie, which explored the lives of three friends and their relationships with each other turned out to be a major success, both critically and commercially with young audiences which not only earned quite a few nominations but also won that year’s National Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi. Farhan’s next venture was the critically acclaimed ‘Lakshya’ in 2004 about the coming of age of an aimless youth who joins the armed forces due to peer pressure and discovers himself. Hrithik’s character of Karan Shergill was quite appreciated by the public.
Farhan then chose to remake Amitabh Bachchan’s 1978 hit film ‘Don’ which starred Shah Rukh Khan who played the role of a ruthlessly brilliant criminal mastermind ‘Don’ which had been immortalized by Big B. The 2006 movie which had a few extra twists and turns from the original flick turned out to be a major box office success, grossing over 50 crores, and being the fifth biggest hit of the year.
After direction, Farhan turned fresh pastures and made his acting and singing debut in Abhishek Kapoor’s ‘Rock On!!’ which released in 2008 which was again a commercial success, especially in metros because of their yuppie music. This movie too won the National Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi. An year later, this was followed by playing the lead role in sister Zoya Akhtar’s directorial debut ‘Luck By Chance’ in which Farhan played a struggling actor but the movie received luke warm response.
In ‘Karthik calling Karthik’, Farhan played the role of a young man suffering from hallucinations and schizophrenia and received moderate success. Farhan then took a break to work on the sequel to ‘Don 2’ starring Shah Rukh Khan but made a comeback again in 2011 with Zoya Akhtar’s 'Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’ about three friends and their road trip which has been a box office success. This filmy all-rounder is definitely Gen Next’s mascot in the years to come…
